Throne and Liberty
Microtransactions in Throne and Liberty are summarized as...
Throne and Liberty is a free-to-play game with an in-game premium shop that sells items such as cosmetics, convenience items, account services, and in-game currency. Playing the game without ever paying can get you to the same power level as those who do pay, but the more you pay, the faster you get there.
All purchases in the in-game premium shop are made by purchasing "Lucent", a premium currency. Lucent is bought in bundles that grant slightly more currency for your money as they go up in quantity. This equates to roughly 500 Lucent for 10 USD.
The game offers various cosmetic purchases. Not all of these are cosmetic only and may provide certain benefits;
- Character skins, ranging from full outfits, weapon skins, and accessories. All of these are cosmetic only. These range from 1100 Lucent (20 USD) to 1500 Lucent (Requiring the purchase of the 50 USD Lucent bundle).
- Dyes and thread, unlocking certain colors or patterns to customize other items. Ranging from 20 to 50 Lucent (Requiring the purchase of the 5 USD Lucent bundle)
- Morphs, allowing you to transform into a different being. Morphs are also available through in-game means, but some are premium only. While most of these offer no benefits you can get otherwise, some do, granting your resistances to certain types of environmental damage.
- Pets, small companions that follow the player. These pets provide small conveniences, such as collecting certain items.
Many of these items are purchased not for your account, but per character, requiring you to purchase them multiple times if you want them across multiple characters.
The premium store also offers crafting materials. These can be earned through in-game means too, but some might require considerable time investment compared to simply purchasing them through the store.
Many account services can only be purchased with Lucent. This includes server transforms, appearance changes, and rename scrolls.
The game sells two types of progression passes, a Leveling Pass, and a Battle Pass. These are both similar in function, but offer different rewards. The Leveling Pass can be purchased once per character and offers benefits while leveling your character. These range from XP boosts to crafting materials. This Pass also offers a free-track, but this functions more as a regular game progression track, granting you stat points and access to new features, rather than benefits.
The Battle Pass offers both cosmetic content and in-game benefits, ranging from crafting materials to in-game currency.
Notably the game allows you to purchase in-game currency with the premium currency, allowing to purchase any item on the market place. This includes anything from crafting materials to high-end gear. As such, while all of this can be earned through regular gameplay, spending money will get you there much faster, allowing you to bypass the grind that these types of games are all about. For some there might be pride in earning the best gear, but that is diminished by the fact it can be purchased with real money instead.
Outside of premium currency purchases the game also offers special packs of various sizes;
- Bronze, for roughly 20 USD, granting 1125 Lucent and in-game cosmetic pet.
- Silver, for roughly 50 USD, granting 2875 Lucent and two in-game morphs.
- Gold, for roughly 100 USD, granting 6000 Lucent, 1 in-game morph, and 2 cosmetics.
Notably all of these packs grant different cosmetics. Purchasing the Gold edition does not grant the cosmetics of the Bronze edition. If you do want all of these cosmetics, you will have to purchase all packs individually.
Before the game was released the game offered many early access packs, ranging from 40 USD to 100 USD, each granting more cosmetics rewards than the previous. Each edition included 5-day early access.
The game offers little advantages for real money purchases that you can't get through regular gameplay, but it does offers a near infinite amount of convenience purchases. It's possible to experience everything the game has to offer without paying, but it might not be realistic to expect to keep on track with players who do choose to spend money, unless you are willing to put in a very large amount of time and effort.
