Stormgate
Microtransactions in Stormgate are summarized as...
Stormgate is a free-to-play game with optional purchases for both cosmetics and gameplay altering content. The game is currently in early-access and not all forms of monetization are available. The developers have been relatively open during the development of the game, including about the monetization.
The game features both multiplayer and solo content. Solo content includes a campaign mode. The first part of the campaign is free, but additional chapters need to be purchased per chapter. These chapter can be purchased as part of a bundle, but at the time these chapters are not yet available to play.
One major part of the game are "Hero units", these are playable character that are available in some modes. These heroes alter the way the game is played, giving you additional abilities are stats. Heroes cost $10 each.
The game features cosmetic content. This comes in the form of character skins, companion pets, and more.
The game will feature multiple battle pass called "War Chests". These will functional identical to other battle passes, expiring when you do not complete them in time. The developers have stated an interest allowing you to purchase individual items from the battle pass after it has expired. Either right after it has expired, or a long time after. However, they have also stated this might not be the case for all cosmetics.
The game offers 3 bundles;
- Early Access Pack, for roughly 25 USD.
- Deluxe Early Access Pack, for roughly 40 USD.
- Ultimate Early Access Pack, for roughly 60 USD.
Each of these bundles contain cosmetics, heroes, story campaigns, and 2-week early access. Each item in the bundles can also be purchased separately (except for the 2-week early access). These bundles do not contain all items that are available right from the start, some can only be purchased separately.
Stormgate was initially funded through Kickstarter. This included costly backer rewards that were intended to include all content that would be available in the initial release, but this turned out to be untrue. The game launched with a hero that was not unlocked for any of the backers and as such required an additional purchase.
